Frequently asked questions.
Let’s be honest, pelvic floor physical therapy isn’t exactly a regular topic at the dinner table… well, maybe at mine (haha), but I digress. If you’ve got questions, you’re not alone! I got you.
What is pelvic floor physical therapy?
Pelvic floor physical therapy is a specialized area of physical therapy that focuses on the pelvic floor muscles and how they interact with the rest of the body. A pelvic floor physical therapist can help promote optimal pelvic health by providing specialized care for individuals with pelvic floor dysfunction. This includes assessing, physical therapy diagnosing, and treating conditions such as but not limited to, pelvic pain, urinary or fecal incontinence, and prolapse through a combination of manual therapy, exercise, education, and more. The goal is to empower patients to take an active role in their own health and well-being, improve their quality of life, and restore function and comfort in their bodies. Importantly, a pelvic floor physical therapist works in close collaboration with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care for their patients.
Who can benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy?
People of all genders and ages may benefit, especially those experiencing urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic pain, postpartum recovery issues, painful sex, constipation, preparing for birth or symptoms related to prolapse (just to name a few).
What happens during a pelvic floor physical therapy session?
Each session is one-on-one and lasts 60 minutes, ensuring you have the time and space to feel truly seen and heard. We begin with a comprehensive evaluation, starting with your story because there’s so much insight to gain from your experiences. From there, sessions are thoughtfully tailored to your unique needs and goals, incorporating a blend of education, hands-on manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, breathwork, lifestyle guidance, and more. This is a collaborative journey, and I'm here with you every step of the way.
Is an internal pelvic floor exam required?
Absolutely not. Internal pelvic floor exams are just one option for assessment and treatment, they are never required. Your comfort, autonomy, and consent are always the top priority. If you choose to proceed with an internal exam, everything will be explained clearly every step of the way, with your consent requested throughout and frequent check-ins to ensure you feel safe and supported. If having someone from your support system with you would make you feel more comfortable, you’re absolutely welcome to bring them along. The more, the merrier!
How many sessions will I need?
I get this question all the time—and the truth is, it really depends. The number of sessions can vary based on your condition, your goals, and how your body responds to treatment. Some people find relief in just a few visits, while others benefit from ongoing care over several months. Ultimately, this is your journey. Open communication and feedback are always encouraged so we can make sure your care feels collaborative, supportive, and aligned with your needs.
Do you take insurance?
I am an out-of-network provider and do not bill insurance directly. This allows me to dedicate more time and attention to each patient, offering personalized, high-quality care without the limitations often imposed by insurance. I do provide superbills, which many patients submit to their insurance for potential reimbursement or to apply toward their deductible (coverage varies, so I encourage you to check with your insurance provider in advance). If you're specifically seeking in-network care, please don't hesitate to reach out! I'm more than happy to help guide you find a practitioner.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No referral needed! In the state of California, you have direct access to physical therapy services, including pelvic health care. This means you can begin treatment without a prescription or referral from a physician.
